Event Details

Figuring History is a major new exhibition presenting three great American artists, spanning three generations, whose work offers thought-provoking new perspectives on American history, art history, and Black culture. Presented together for the first time, the large-scale figurative paintings of Robert Colescott, Kerry James Marshall, and Mickalene Thomas are shaped by the distinctive historic events of the artists’ own generations and informed by their personal experiences. All three artists dare us to think differently about art history, and challenge a Western figurative painting tradition that has very few representations of people of color.
